RESUMO

This study mitigated the challenge of head and neck CT angiography by IPA-based time-resolved imaging of contrast kinetics. To this end, 627 cerebral hemorrhage patients with dizziness, brain aneurysm, stroke, or hemorrhagic stroke diagnosis were randomly categorized into three groups, namely, the original dataset (450), verification group (112), and in vivo testified group (65), in the Affiliated BenQ Hospital of Nanjing Medical University. In the first stage, seven risk factors were assigned: age, CTA tube voltage, body surface area, heart rate per minute, cardiac output blood per minute, the actual injected amount of contrast media, and CTA delayed trigger timing. The expectation value of the semi-empirical formula was the CTA number of the patient's left artery (LA). Accordingly, 29 items of the first-order nonlinear equation were calculated via the inverse problem analysis (IPA) technique run in the STATISTICA 7.0 program, yielding a loss function and variance of 3.1837 and 0.8892, respectively. A dimensionless AT was proposed to imply the coincidence, with a lower AT indicating a smaller deviation between theoretical and practical values. The derived formula was confirmed for the verification group of 112 patients, reaching high coincidence, with average ATavg and standard deviation values of 3.57% and 3.06%, respectively. In the second stage, the formula was refined to find the optimal amount of contrast media for the CTA number of LA approaching 400. Finally, the above procedure was applied to head and neck CTA images of the third group of 65 patients, reaching an average CTA number of LA of 407.8 ± 16.2 and finding no significant fluctuations.

Hyperuricemia has been linked with the development of diabetes, gout, kidney, and cardiovascular diseases. Although obesity is associated with hyperuricemia, data on sex differences in this association are scarce. Therefore, this study was conducted to explore sex differences in the correlations among various indices of obesity with hyperuricemia in Taiwan. Data were obtained from the Taiwan Biobank and included 122,067 participants. After excluding 179 participants with missing data, the remaining 121,888 participants (men: 43,790; women: 78,098) were enrolled. The prevalence rates of hyperuricemia (defined as serum uric acid >7.0/6.0 mg/dL in men/women) were 29.8% and 13.6%, respectively (p < 0.001). Multivariable analysis revealed high values of body shape index (ABSI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist-hip ratio (WHR), lipid accumulation product (LAP), conicity index (CI), visceral adiposity index (VAI), body adiposity index (BAI), abdominal volume index (AVI), body mass index (BMI), and body roundness index (BRI) were significantly associated with hyperuricemia in both the male and female participants (all p < 0.001). The interactions between sex and all 10 of these indices were significant (all p < 0.001) for hyperuricemia. In men, LAP had the highest area under the curve (0.669), followed by BMI (0.655), VAI (0.645), AVI (0.642), BRI (0.640), WHtR (0.633), BAI (0.605), WHR (0.599), CI (0.574), and ABSI (0.510). In women, LAP also had the highest area under the curve (0.754), followed by BMI (0.728), VAI (0.724), WHtR (0.721), BRI (0.720), AVI (0.713), WHR (0.676), BAI (0.673), CI (0.626), and ABSI (0.544). In conclusion, obesity-related indices were associated with hyperuricemia in this large Taiwanese study, and sex differences were found in these associations, with stronger associations in women than in men.

RESUMO

P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy is a feasible alternative treatment for patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in the modern era. Clinical trials have shown that it could lower the risk of bleeding complications without increased ischemic events as compared to standard dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT). However, the efficacy and safety of this novel approach among patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) are controversial because they have a much higher risk for recurrent ischemic events. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of this novel approach among patients with ACS. We conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials that compared P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy with 12-month DAPT in ACS patients who underwent PCI with stent implantation. PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane library database, ClinicalTrials.gov, and other three websites were searched for data from the earliest report to July 2022. The primary efficacy outcome was major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE), a composite of all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, stent thrombosis, or stroke. The primary safety outcome was major or minor bleeding events. The secondary endpoint was net adverse clinical events (NACE), defined as a composite of major bleeding and adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events. Five randomized controlled trials with a total of 21,034 patients were included in our meta-analysis. The quantitative analysis showed a significant reduction in major or minor bleeding events in patients treated with P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy as compared with standard DAPT(OR: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.46-0.75, p < 0.0001) without increasing the risk of MACCE (OR: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.86-1.13, p = 0.82). The NACE was favorable in the patients treated with P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy (OR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.73-0.93, p = 0.002). Of note, the overall clinical benefit of P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy was quite different between ticagrelor and clopidogrel. The incidence of NACE was significantly lower in ticagrelor monotherapy as compared with DAPT (OR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.68-0.91), but not in clopidogrel monotherapy (OR: 1.14, 95% CI: 0.79-1.63). Both clopidogrel and ticagrelor monotherapy showed a similar reduction in bleeding complications (OR: 0.46, 95% CI: 0.22-0.94; OR: 0.60, 95% CI: 0.44-0.83, respectively). Although statistically insignificant, the incidence of MACCE was numerically higher in clopidogrel monotherapy as compared with standard DAPT (OR: 1.50, 95% CI: 0.99-2.28, p = 0.06). Based on these findings, P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy with ticagrelor would be a better choice of medical treatment for ACS patients after PCI with stent implantation in the current era.

Phytophthora capsici is one of the most devastating pathogens facing pepper (Capsicum annuum) producers worldwide. Numerous factors, such as the race of the pathogen, the growing environment, and the source of resistance, have resulted in an overall lack of widely applicable molecular markers associated with resistance. Our objective was to determine the effect of the rating system on quantitative trait locus (QTL) detection and understand inheritance patterns of host resistance that can influence selection and molecular marker accuracy. We evaluated an F2:11 recombinant inbred line population screened against the highly virulent strain (Pc134) and scored using two widely used methods, developed by Bosland and Lindsey and by Black. The rating system developed by Bosland and Lindsey resulted in slightly higher logarithm of odds for the QTL on chromosome 5, and we detected a QTL on chromosome 12 uniquely using this rating system. A QTL on chromosome 10 was detected using both rating systems, but Black resulted in considerably higher logarithm of odds for this QTL compared with the Bosland and Lindsey system. Molecular markers developed were nominally better at accurately predicting the phenotype than previously published molecular markers but did not completely explain resistance in our validation populations. The inheritance pattern of resistance in one of our F2 populations did not significantly deviate from a 7:9 segregation ratio, indicating duplicative recessive epistasis. However, these results could be confounded by the presence of incomplete gene action, which was found through the improved selection accuracy when the phenotypes of heterozygous individuals were grouped with those with susceptible alleles.

Candida albicans is a commensal microorganism in the human gut but occasionally causes invasive C. albicans infection (ICA), especially in immunocompromised individuals. Early initiation of antifungal therapy is associated with reduced mortality of ICA, but rapid diagnosis remains a challenge. The ICA-associated changes in the gut microbiota can be used as diagnostic and therapeutic targets but have been poorly investigated. In this study, we utilized an immunodeficient Rag2γc (Rag2-/-il2γc-/-) mouse model to investigate the gut microbiota alterations caused by C. albicans throughout its cycle, from its introduction into the gastrointestinal tract to invasion, in the absence of antibiotics. We observed a significant increase in the abundance of Firmicutes, particularly Lachnospiraceae and Ruminococcaceae, as well as a significant decrease in the abundance of Candidatus Arthromitus in mice exposed to either the wild-type SC5314 strain or the filamentation-defective mutant (cph1/cph1 efg1/efg1) HLC54 strain of C. albicans. However, only the SC5314-infected mice developed ICA. A linear discriminate analysis of the temporal changes in the gut bacterial composition revealed Bacteroides vulgatus as a discriminative biomarker associated with SC5314-infected mice with ICA. Additionally, a positive correlation between the B. vulgatus abundance and fungal load was found, and the negative correlation between the Candidatus Arthromitus abundance and fungal load after exposure to C. albicans suggested that C. albicans might affect the differentiation of intestinal Th17 cells. Our findings reveal the influence of pathogenic C. albicans on the gut microbiota and identify the abundance of B. vulgatus as a microbiota signature associated with ICA in an immunodeficient mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is major cause of ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) and sudden death. neuECG is a noninvasive method to simultaneously record skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA) and electrocardiogram. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypotheses that (1) ACS increases average SKNA (aSKNA), (2) the magnitude of aSKNA elevation is associated with VAs during ACS, and (3) there is a gender difference in aSKNA between patients without and with ACS. METHODS: We prospectively studied 128 ACS and 165 control participants. The neuECG was recorded with electrodes at Lead I configuration at baseline, during mental math stress, and during recovery (5 minutes for each phase). All recordings were done in the morning. RESULTS: In the control group, women have higher aSKNA than do men at baseline (0.82 ± 0.25 µV vs 0.73 ± 0.20 µV; P = .009) but not during mental stress (1.21 ± 0.36 µV vs 1.16 ± 0.36 µV; P = .394), suggesting women had lower sympathetic reserve. In comparison, ACS is associated with equally elevated aSKNA in women vs men at baseline (1.14 ± 0.33 µV vs 1.04 ± 0.35 µV; P = .531), during mental stress (1.46 ± 0.32 µV vs 1.33 ± 0.37 µV; P = .113), and during recovery (1.30 ± 0.33 µV vs 1.11 ± 0.30 µV; P = .075). After adjusting for age and gender, the adjusted odds ratio for VAs including ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation is 1.23 (95% confidence interval 1.05-1.44) for each 0.1 µV aSKNA elevation. aSKNA is positively correlated with plasma norepinephrine level. CONCLUSION: ACS is associated with elevated aSKNA, and the magnitude of aSKNA elevation is associated with the occurrence of VAs. Women have higher aSKNA and lower SKNA reserve than do men among controls but not among patients with ACS.

(1) Background: The autonomic imbalance plays a role in vasovagal syncope (VVS) diagnosed by head-up tilting test (HUT). neuECG is a new method of recording skin electrical signals to simultaneously analyze skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA) and electrocardiogram. We hypothesize that SKNA is higher in subjects with tilt-positive than tilt-negative and the SKNA surges before syncope. (2) Methods: We recorded neuECG in 41 subjects who received HUT (according to the "Italian protocol"), including rest, tilt-up, provocation and recovery phases. Data were analyzed to determine the average SKNA (aSKNA, µV) per digitized sample. Electrocardiogram was used to calculate standard deviation of normal-to-normal beat intervals (SDNN). The "SKNA-SDNN index" was calculated by rest aSKNA multiplied by the ratio of tilt-up to rest SDNN. (3) Results: 16 of 41 (39%) subjects developed syncope. The aSKNA at rest phase is significantly higher in the tilt-positive (1.21 ± 0.27 µV) than tilt-negative subjects (1.02 ± 0.29 µV) (p = 0.034). There are significant surges and withdraw of aSKNA 30 s before and after syncope (both p ≤ 0.006). SKNA-SDNN index is able to predict syncope (p < 0.001). (4) Conclusion: Higher SKNA at rest phase is associated with positive HUT. The SKNA-SDNN index is a novel marker to predict syncope during HUT.

Dengue is an emerging mosquito-borne disease, and the use of prophylactic vaccines is still limited. We previously developed a tetravalent dengue vaccine (rMV-TDV) by a recombinant measles virus (MV) vector expressing envelope protein domain III (ED3). In this study, we used dengue-susceptible AG129 mice to evaluate the protective and/or pathogenic immune responses induced by rMV-TDV. Consistent with the previous study, rMV-TDV-immunized mice developed a significant neutralizing antibody response against all serotypes of DENV, as well as a significant IFN-γ response biased to DENV-3, compared to the vector controls. We further demonstrated that this DENV-3-specific IFN-γ response was dominated by one CD4+ T-cell epitope located in E349-363. After DENV-2 challenge, rMV-TDV-immunized mice showed a significantly lower viremia and no inflammatory cytokine increase compared to the vector controls, which had an ~100 times higher viremia and a significant increase in IFN-γ and TNF-α. As a correlate of protection, a robust memory IFN-γ response specific to DENV-2 was boosted in rMV-TDV-immunized mice after challenge. This result suggested that pre-existing DENV-3-dominated T-cell responses did not cross-react, but a DENV-2-specific IFN-γ response, which was undetectable during immunization, was recalled. Interestingly, this recalled T-cell response recognized the epitope in the same position as the E349-363 but in the DENV-2 serotype. This result suggested that immunodomination occurred in the CD4+ T-cell epitopes between dengue serotypes after rMV-TDV vaccination and resulted in a DENV-3-dominated CD4+ T-cell response. Although the significant increase in IgG against both DENV-2 and -3 suggested that cross-reactive antibody responses were boosted, the increased neutralizing antibodies and IgG avidity still remained DENV-2 specific, consistent with the serotype-specific T cell response post challenge. Our data reveal that immunodomination caused a biased T-cell response to one of the dengue serotypes after tetravalent dengue vaccination and highlight the roles of cross-reactive T cells in dengue protection.

Candida albicans is the leading cause of candidemia or other invasive candidiasis. Gastrointestinal colonization has been considered as the primary source of candidemia. However, few established mouse models that mimic this infection route are available. In the present study, we established a mouse model of disseminated candidiasis developed through the translocation of Candida from the gut. In this study, we developed a novel C. albicans GI colonization and dissemination animal model by using severe combined immunodeficient Rag2-/-IL2γc-/- (Rag2γc) mice, which lack functional T, B, NK cells, and IL2γc-dependent signaling. Rag2γc mice were highly susceptible to C. albicans gastrointestinal infection even in the presence of the gut microbiota. Within 4 weeks post infection, Rag2γc mice showed dose-dependent weight loss and disseminated candidiasis in more than 58% (7/12) of moribund mice. Histological analysis demonstrated abundant hyphae penetrating the mucosa, with significant neutrophilic infiltration in mice infected with wild-type C. albicans but not a filamentation-defective mutant. In moribund Rag2γc mice, the necrotic lesions and disrupted epithelial cells were associated with C. albicans hyphae. Notably, removal of the gut microbiota by antibiotics exacerbated the severity of fungal infection in Rag2γc mice, as demonstrated by elevated fungal burdens and accelerated weight loss and death. Furthermore, higher fungal burden and IL-1ß expression were prominently noted in the stomach of Rag2γc mice. In fact, a significant increase in circulating proinflammatory cytokines, including IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-10, indicative of a septic response, was evident in infected Rag2γc mice. Additionally, Rag2γc mice exhibited significantly lower levels of IL-22 but not IFN-γ or IL-17A than wild-type B6 mice, suggesting that IL-22 plays a role in C. albicans gastrointestinal infection. Collectively, our analysis of the Rag2γc mouse model revealed features of C. albicans gastrointestinal colonization and dissemination without the interference from antibiotics or chemotherapeutic agents, thus offering a new investigative tool for delineating the pathogenesis of C. albicans and its cross-talk with the gut microbiota.

An organocuprate(III) complex, [Cu(TMSPS3)(CH2CN)]- (2), was identified along with a sequential derivative, [Cu(TMSPS3)(CN)]- (3), and an intermediate, [Cu(TMSPS3)(HN═PPh3)] (4), formed in a relative transformation. Apical ligands among these complexes all strongly associate with a robust trigonal copper(III) platform. The nature of the ligand binding was spectroscopically and computationally investigated through a series of copper(III) complexes. The bonding along the principal C3 axis is adaptable, and σ interaction dominates the axial ligand coordination, where the cyanomethyl group exhibits the strongest bonding. Complex 2 is a scarce example of a thermostable aliphatic organocuprate(III) compound, which sheds some light on the organocopper(III) chemistry widely involved in many copper-mediated catalyses.

Local Treg responses are involved in Helicobacter pylori-related inflammation and clinical outcomes after infection, and H. pylori-derived HSP60 (HpHSP60) is an important virulence factor associated with gastric carcinogenesis. This study to investigate the role of HpHSP60 in immunosuppression, particularly with regard to whether it could induce the production of Treg cells. For this purpose, human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were treated with or without HpHSP60 in the presence of an anti-CD3 mAb to determine the effect of HpHSP60 on cell proliferation. In this report, HpHSP60 decreased the expression of CDK4 to significantly arrest the proliferation of mitogen-stimulated T-cells, which correlated with the induction of Treg cells. Moreover, monocytic cells were essential for the induction of HpHSP60-induced Treg cells via the secretion of IL-10 and TGF-ß after treatment with HpHSP60. Blockage of HpHSP60 with specific monoclonal antibodies significantly reduced the colonization of H. pylori and the expression of Treg cells in vivo. Overall, our results suggest that HpHSP60 could act on macrophages to trigger the expression of IL-10 and TGF-ß, thereby leading to an increase in Treg cells and inhibition of T-cell proliferation.

We previously reported that the dietary flavonoids, luteolin and quercetin, might inhibit the invasiveness of cervical cancer by reversing epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) signaling. However, the regulatory mechanism exerted by luteolin and quercetin is still unclear. This study analyzed the invasiveness activation by ubiquitin E2S ligase (UBE2S) through EMT signaling and inhibition by luteolin and quercetin. We found that UBE2S expression was significantly higher in highly invasive A431 subgroup III (A431-III) than A431-parental (A431-P) cells. UBE2S small interfering (si)RNA knockdown and overexpression experiments showed that UBE2S increased the migratory and invasive abilities of cancer cells through EMT signaling. Luteolin and quercetin significantly inhibited UBE2S expression. UBE2S showed a negative correlation with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) and a positive correlation with hypoxia-induced factor (Hif)-1α. Our findings suggest that high UBE2S in malignant cancers contributes to cell motility through EMT signaling and is reversed by luteolin and quercetin. UBE2S might contribute to Hif-1α signaling in cervical cancer. These results show the metastatic inhibition of cervical cancer by luteolin and quercetin through reducing UBE2S expression, and provide a functional role for UBE2S in the motility of cervical cancer. UBE2S could be a potential therapeutic target in cervical cancer.

The race for performance of integrated circuits is nowadays facing a downscale limitation. To overpass this nanoscale limit, modern transistors with complex geometries have flourished, allowing higher performance and energy efficiency. Accompanying this breakthrough, challenges toward high-performance devices have emerged on each significant step, such as the inhomogeneous coverage issue and thermal-induced short circuit issue of metal silicide formation. In this respect, we developed a two-step organometallic approach for nickel silicide formation under near-ambient temperature. Transmission electron and atomic force microscopy show the formation of a homogeneous and conformal layer of NiSix on pristine silicon surface. Post-treatment decreases the carbon content to a level similar to what is found for the original wafer (∼6%). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy also reveals an increasing ratio of Si content in the layer after annealing, which is shown to be NiSi2 according to X-ray absorption spectroscopy investigation on a Si nanoparticle model. I-V characteristic fitting reveals that this NiSi2 layer exhibits a competitive Schottky barrier height of 0.41 eV and series resistance of 8.5 Ω, thus opening an alternative low-temperature route for metal silicide formation on advanced devices.

Size and growth rates for individual colonies are some of the most essential descriptive parameters for understanding coral communities, which are currently experiencing worldwide declines in health and extent. Accurately measuring coral colony size and changes over multiple years can reveal demographic, growth, or mortality patterns often not apparent from short-term observations and can expose environmental stress responses that may take years to manifest. Describing community size structure can reveal population dynamics patterns, such as periods of failed recruitment or patterns of colony fission, which have implications for the future sustainability of these ecosystems. However, rapidly and non-invasively measuring coral colony sizes in situ remains a difficult task, as three-dimensional underwater digital reconstruction methods are currently not practical for large numbers of colonies. Two-dimensional (2D) planar area measurements from projection of underwater photographs are a practical size proxy, although this method presents operational difficulties in obtaining well-controlled photographs in the highly rugose environment of the coral reef, and requires extensive time for image processing. Here, we present and test the measurement variance for a method of making rapid planar area estimates of small to medium-sized coral colonies using a lightweight monopod image-framing system and a custom semi-automated image segmentation analysis program. This method demonstrated a coefficient of variation of 2.26% for repeated measurements in realistic ocean conditions, a level of error appropriate for rapid, inexpensive field studies of coral size structure, inferring change in colony size over time, or measuring bleaching or disease extent of large numbers of individual colonies.

A stable trigonal bipyramidal copper(III) complex, [PPN][Cu((TMS)PS3)Cl] (1, wherein PPN represents bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium), was synthesized from CuCl2/PPNCl via intramolecular copper(II) disproportionation. Under ambient conditions, the axial chloride of 1 is exchangeable in solution thus making 1 serve as an intermediate to prepare trigonal bipyramidal copper(III) derivatives, e.g., [PPN][Cu((TMS)PS3)(N3)] (2) and [Cu((TMS)PS3)(DABCO)] (3). Diamagnetic complexes 1-3 were fully characterized by X-ray crystallography, NMR, UV-vis, and Cu K-edge absorption spectroscopy. A series of UV-vis titrations were performed to investigate the relative ligand affinity toward the [Cu((TMS)PS3)] moiety, verifying the 1:1 binding equilibrium between various ligands. Compared to known copper(III) compounds, Cu K-edge absorptions of 1-3 possess lower pre-edge energy and higher shakedown transition energy, which, respectively, attribute to the electron donation from (TMS)PS3(3-) ligand and their trigonal ligand field.

Hexaoligochitin produced by chitinase, ASCHI61, from Aeromonas schubertii was recently expressed. In this work, the optimal conditions for the mass production of ASCHI61 were investigated. The efficiency of recombinant protein expression in Escherichia coli was determined by various parameters, including the pH of the culture medium, induction temperature, shaking speed, inducer concentration, and induction period. The optimization experiments could be simplified through a statistical design of experiments (response surface methodology). From the fractional factorial design, the interactive effect of induction temperature and time was the most significant. The total activity of the enzyme was 32,092 U at 23.9 °C with 115 min of induction. Under those conditions, the total activity of the recombinant protein was 30,650 U in the fermentation experiments, with an error of only 4.8%. The total activity of ASCHI61 increased 1.54-fold under the optimal conditions. Based on the results, ASCHI61 can be expressed more for hexaoligochitin production.

Metastasis is a major cause of mortality in cancer patients. Invadopodia are considered to be crucial structures that allow cancer cells to penetrate across the extracellular matrix (ECM) by using matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Previously, we isolated a highly invasive A431-III subline from parental A431 cells by Boyden chamber assay. The A431-III cells possess higher invasive and migratory abilities, elevated levels of MMP-9 and an enhanced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) phenotype. In this study, we discovered that A431-III cells had an increased potential to form invadopodia and an improved capacity to degrade ECM compared with the original A431 cells. We also observed enhanced phosphorylation levels of cortactin and Src in A431-III cells; these phosphorylated proteins have been reported to be the main regulators of invadopodia formation. Flavonoids, almost ubiquitously distributed in food plants and plant food products, have been documented to exhibit anti-tumor properties. Therefore, it was of much interest to explore the effects of flavonoid antioxidants on the metastatic activity of A431-III cells. Exposure of A431-III cells to two potent dietary flavonoids, namely luteolin (Lu) and quercetin (Qu), caused inhibition of invadopodia formation and decrement in ECM degradation. We conclude that Lu and Qu attenuate the phosphorylation of cortactin and Src in A431-III cells. As a consequence, there ensues a disruption of invadopodia generation and the suppression of MMP secretion. These changes, in concert, bring about a reduction in metastasis.

We demonstrate here that the nanostructure of poly(3-hexylthiophene) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT/PCBM) bulk heterojunction (BHJ) can be tuned by inorganic nanoparticles (INPs) for enhanced solar cell performance. The self-organized nanostructural evolution of P3HT/PCBM/INPs thin films was investigated by using simultaneous grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) technique. Including INPs into P3HT/PCBM leads to (1) diffusion of PCBM molecules into aggregated PCBM clusters and (2) formation of interpenetrating networks that contain INPs which interact with amorphous P3HT polymer chains that are intercalated with PCBM molecules. Both of the nanostructures provide efficient pathways for free electron transport. The distinctive INP-tuned nanostructures are thermally stable and exhibit significantly enhanced electron mobility, external quantum efficiency, and photovoltaic device performance. These gains over conventional P3HT/PCBM directly result from newly demonstrated nanostructure. This work provides an attractive strategy for manipulating the phase-separated BHJ layers and also increases insight into nanostructural evolution when INPs are incorporated into BHJs.

We have developed an improved small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) model and analysis methodology to quantitatively evaluate the nanostructures of a blend system. This method has been applied to resolve the various structures of self-organized poly(3-hexylthiophene)/C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT/PCBM) thin active layer in a solar cell from the studies of both grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD). Tuning the various length scales of PCBM-related structures by a different annealing process can provide a flexible approach and better understanding to enhance the power conversion of the P3HT/PCBM solar cell. The quantitative structural characterization by this method includes (1) the mean size, volume fraction, and size distribution of aggregated PCBM clusters, (2) the specific interface area between PCBM and P3HT, (3) the local cluster agglomeration, and (4) the correlation length of the PCBM molecular network within the P3HT phase. The above terms are correlated well with the device performance. The various structural evolutions and transformations (growth and dissolution) between PCBM and P3HT with the variation of annealing history are demonstrated here. This work established a useful SAXS approach to present insight into the modeling of the morphology of P3HT/PCBM film. In situ GISAXS measurements were also conducted to provide informative details of thermal behavior and temporal evolution of PCBM-related structures during phase separation. The results of this investigation significantly extend the current knowledge of the relationship of bulk heterojunction morphology to device performance.
